About Reston
Reston is a community
that was
planned under the visionary leadership of Robert
E. Simon. It is an unincorporated
census-designated place in western Fairfax
County, Virginia, located in the Washington D.C.
metropolitan area. The
community had a population of 56,407 as of 2000.
Even though Reston is not a city and
lacks a traditional central business district, the
Reston Town Center is becoming a focal point for
business and public transportation within the
community. The area has several high-rise
office buildings, restaurants, and
shops.
Reston is
conveniently situated next to the booming
Dulles Technology Corridor and is home to the
world headquarters of a few Fortune 500
corporations, such as NVR, Sprint Nextel, Sallie
Mae, as well as the United States Geological
Survey, the National Wildlife Federation, and
CNRI.
Founded on April
20, 1964, Reston became the first modern planned
community in America that helped spark the new town concept. Robert E. Simon and
his family used their funds from a recently sold
Carnegie Hall to create Reston. From the
beginning, Reston was designed
to be a place where its citizens could live,
work, and have recreation in their own
community, with common grounds and scenic
beauty shared equally regardless of income
level. Reston is one of just a handful of
communities in the U.S. that has been designated
a backyard wildlife habitat community.
A special tax
district within Fairfax County was created to
fund the various educational, cultural, and
recreational activities in the area at the
Reston Community Center. The
center has a theater, indoor heated swimming
pool with jacuzzi, ballroom, meeting rooms, and
classroom space. The aw ard-winning
Reston Community Players present productions in
the high-tech theater at Hunters Woods. The
Reston Chorale and Reston Symphony also have
regular performances here and throughout the
town. A smaller branch of the Reston Community
Center is located at Lake Anne, where free
concerts occur in the summer. Since
Washington, D.C. is only 20 miles away,
residents of Reston also have the opportunity of
enjoying additional educational, cultural, and
entertainment related activities there, too.
